The Toronto Black Film Festival is honoured to present the TBFF 2025 Career Achievement Award to Ernie Hudson. Distinguished actor and producer whose remarkable career spans over five decades in film, television, and theatre as part of the opening night celebrations Feb. 12, 7:30 pm at the Isabel Bader Theatre. The tribute will precede the Opening Film: Fight Like a Girl by Matthew Leutwyler and a Q&A with Producer Anton Laines.

Ernie Hudson, one of this generation’s most well-versed actors, is back on the big screen. This spring, he will return as one of the stars in the timeless Ghostbusters franchise with its latest installment, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. As one of the original stars from the classic films, his character, Winston, is now a billionaire leading the Ghostbusters team. He reunites with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd to bring back the original crew.
He currently stars alongside Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett in the reboot of Quantum Leap on NBC and Peacock, which recently completed its second season. The series follows a new team as they restart the Quantum Leap project in hopes of uncovering the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.
Ernie also stars in and executive produces the television series The Family Business, now in its fifth season on BET Plus and streaming on Netflix. He previously starred in the acclaimed Netflix drama Grace and Frankie alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. He won the Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Series for his performance in HBO’s acclaimed prison drama OZ. His extensive television credits include Modern Family, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Law & Order, L.A.’s Finest with Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, Twin Peaks, Scandal, Blue Bloods, Grey’s Anatomy, and Ballers with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
His film credits include all five Ghostbusters movies, The Crow with Brandon Lee, Miss Congeniality 1 & 2 with Sandra Bullock, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle opposite Julianne Moore and Rebecca De Mornay, and Congo with Laura Linney. Recent film releases include Champions with Woody Harrelson, The Retirement Plan with Nicolas Cage, and Prisoner’s Daughter with Brian Cox.
When not working, Ernie prides himself on staying fit and spending time with his family. The Michigan native divides his time between Los Angeles and the serene San Bernardino Mountains.
