THE MALÊ REVOLT

Co-presented by

January 1835, Salvador, Bahia. After working hard for more than a decade, a muslim slave named Guilhermina (27) finally saves up enough money to buy her manumission, as well as Teresa's, her 11-year-old daughter. When she tries to pay her "master" Souza Velho, the landowner breaks an old promise and refuses to let the little girl go. At the same time, the most prominent leader of the Muslim community in Salvador, Pacífico Licutan, is arrested by local authorities, and a jihad becomes imminent. In despair, Guilhermina starts to see the uprising as the last opportunity of setting her daughter free.
