By 15 Emerging Black Filmmakers

BEING BLACK IN CANADA, Toronto Edition YOUTH AND DIVERSITY PROGRAM, BEING BLACK IN CANADA The Project “Being Black in Canada.” enabled 15 young filmmakers, aged 18 to 30, from the black communities of Montreal, Toronto and Halifax (5 per city) to create 15 documentary shorts of 8 to 10 minutes each. The 15 promising filmmakers were guided through the many steps in audiovisual production (screenwriting, directing, editing, post-production, etc.) and creation of a documentary short (maximum 10 minutes). This process was carried out under the professional tutelage of an industry professional with professional equipment from Oya Media Group and Pathway to Industry This pan-Canadian project was made possible thanks to the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Montreal Arts Council, in collaboration with the Inis (National Institute of Image and Sound). Filmmakers addressed the issue of social integration of people from black communities in Canada through film. The 15 films will be presented at the 8th Toronto Black Film Festival followed by talks to discuss the socio-economic issues and black realities in cinema and society, particularly their respective provinces and share possible solutions for better inclusion of black youth in the community.
