YOU CAN'T GET LOST IN JOBURG
By Simon Stanton-Sharma
You Can't Get Lost in Joburg represents the stories and experiences of some of the approximately 300 female ride-hailing drivers in Johannesburg. Frequently dubbed one of the most violent cities in the world where taxi drivers are killed and robbed on a daily basis, these women give a sense of what it means to live and work so precariously. Taking steers from sensory ethnography and modernist cinema, the individual interviews about the working lives of female Uber drivers convey the ongoing relevance of modernist philosophies, aesthetics and politics in contemporary South Africa, whilst introducing a lyrical dimension to conventional documentary making.
